Learning in Emergencies

Children have a right to learn, wherever they are, in whichever circumstances, in flexible ways that support their psychosocial and cognitive development. The GEC works with Education Clusters to put children’s learning at the heart of education in emergencies responses.

In response to the global learning crisis, the Global Education Cluster (GEC) held its 2024 Annual Partners Meeting on the theme “Learning in emergencies,” with a view to reflecting on how education in emergency (EiE) coordination can be leveraged to better support children’s learning. The key meeting outcome was the development of a Collective Actions Roadmap (2025-26). With guidance from the GEC Strategic Advisory Group (SAG), three high priority actions were identified, requiring an uplift.

The Learning Task Team was established in January 2025 to oversee progress on all collective actions prioritized for the year, with a particular focus on contributing to the three high priority actions. See the full Learning Task Team TOR here.

Partnership with the Interagency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE)

Accelerated Education Working Group (AEWG) and Teachers in Crisis Contexts (TiCC):
To drive forward progress on children’s learning in emergencies, the GEC has strong partnerships with two INEE Working Groups: the Accelerated Education Working Group (AEWG) and the Teachers in Crisis Contexts (TiCC) Working Group. The AEWG has developed an Offer of Support for country Education Clusters interested in strengthening quality elements of accelerated education. The TiCC can provide Education Clusters with technical support around standardizing teacher competencies and teacher professional development in emergencies.
